`Cheeky’ calves share Miss September title
Donna Evans has taken thousands of photos around her Tasmanian farm but this image of two calves she raised is something special.
The calves have jointly earned the title of Miss September in the 2016 online Legendairy calendar, part of the dairy industry’s celebration of the special bond Australia’s Legendairy farmers have with their animals.
Donna took the photo at her picturesque 275 hectare farm overlooking Bass Strait at Wesley Vale.
Nine years ago Donna was a travel agent in Canada but her life was turned upside down when she met her dairy farming future husband, Geoff Loane.
Now she’s settled into farming life and particularly enjoys taking on the farm’s calf rearing duties. “I'm always following my calves around as they grow and these two were part of the yearling mob. I think it shows their cheeky personalities and also demonstrates the calm temperament that I strive for while rearing them,” she said.
“I always take my digital SLR with me when I'm out checking up on my calves, yearlings, heifers and favourites,” she said.
The heifer on the left is the daughter of Donna’s favourite cow Gidget. “She has the best personality, is one of the best cows in the herd and has also done very well in the show ring,” Donna said.
Donna entered the calendar competition through Legendairy’s Facebook page. “I’m chuffed that it was selected. I love taking and sharing my photos and was thrilled to have one chosen for the calendar,” she said.
“Legendairy has been very supportive of our dairy shows and calf days here in Tassie.”
Donna and Geoff milk about 280 mostly Jerseys with some Holsteins, and Donna also has three special Brown Swiss cows.
